A slender strip of water separates the island of San Servolo from the Giardini della Biennale, the exceptional contemporary art exhibition area. Over the past decade, the island has hosted various national pavilions for Venice's Biennale d'Arte e di Architettura, collateral events and a variety of temporary photography, painting, sculpture exhibitions, music festivals and video reviews. It has hosted numerous inaugural events for the Biennale both indoors and out. Its lovely garden has often been "interpreted" by various contemporary artists in site-specific installations. Here, visitors can admire permanent sculptures by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Pietro Consagra, Han Meilin, Oliviero Rainaldi, Bořek Šipek, Sandro Chia, Fabrizio Plessi , Gianni Aricò and Marco Lodola.
